Discovery of Lenya Sigat’s Body
SARIKEI: An elderly woman who was reported missing after bathing at Sungai Baron last Thursday has been found dead today (June 9), not far from where she was last seen. The victim, identified as 62-year-old Lenya Sigat, was discovered by rescuers at 10:38 am.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) stated that the body, found floating unclothed at the riverbank, was located about 100 metres from the search and rescue (SAR) control post. The body was retrieved and taken to the SAR control post before being handed over to the police, who then transported it to the hospital for a post-mortem.
Circumstances of the Disappearance
Lenya was reported missing last Thursday (June 6) when her siblings noticed her absence around 1 pm. After failing to find her at home, they searched the river in front of Rh Tury. Initial search efforts by the villagers led to the discovery of a white paint can containing items such as soap and Lenya’s clothes, drifting about 100 metres from the bathing location.
Search Operation Details
Firefighters from the Sarikei station and the Civil Defence Force (APM) were dispatched to the scene to commence the search operation after being informed of the incident on Friday. The coordinated efforts of these agencies, alongside local villagers, ultimately led to the tragic discovery of Lenya Sigat’s body.
