SIBU (March 22): The flood situation in Sibu and Kapit has worsened, forcing the evacuation of 982 victims from 278 households as of 5pm today. The evacuees are currently taking shelter in seven temporary relief centres (PPS) across both districts.
In Sibu, the affected residents have been relocated to several PPS:
- Dewan Komuniti Sibu Jaya – 59 victims from 20 households

- Asrama Belia Kapit – 85 victims from 16 households
- Dewan Suarah Kapit – 156 victims from 36 households
- Dewan Sri Baleh – Activated but yet to receive evacuees
According to Sibu Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Andy Alie, the floodwaters in several areas of Sibu continue to rise due to the king tide, worsening the situation for residents.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. He noted that while water levels in Kapit have begun to recede, downstream areas remain critical.
“This morning, we received information from the Kapit Resident’s Office that water levels there have started to recede. However, downstream areas remain at a critical level,” he said during his visit to the Selangau Multipurpose Hall PPS today.
He also warned that the number of evacuees may continue to rise as evacuation efforts are still ongoing. The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating relief efforts.
Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to stay prepared for possible evacuations and to cooperate with emergency responders for their safety.
