KUCHING (Jan 3) – Villagers of Kampung Selampit and Kampung Bitokan, who rely heavily on river transportation, have received much-needed relief as two fibre boats are set to be provided as a temporary measure while awaiting the completion of the Selampit Bridge.
The initiative, costing RM290,400, will see the boats handed over to the Kampung Selampit Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) for management. This step aims to address immediate transportation challenges faced by the community.
According to a report from the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), villagers are optimistic about the positive impact of this provision. The boats will be instrumental in easing daily tasks, such as ferrying children to school and transporting agricultural goods to nearby markets.
Earlier this week, Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang joined a trial session for the boats at Sungai Batang Kayan in Lundu. He emphasised the state government’s dedication to supporting rural communities with safer and more efficient transportation options.
“The state government understands the needs of those relying on waterways. Providing these boats will enable villagers to maintain their routines with minimal disruption while the Selampit Bridge is under construction,” Billy stated.
The Selampit Bridge project underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity in rural Sarawak. Once completed, it will replace the dependency on river transport, offering safer and more reliable access for residents.
This initiative comes in the wake of a tragic incident last August, where three students lost their lives after a boat carrying 16 passengers, including 13 students, sank in Sungai Batang Kayan.
Villagers expressed gratitude for the temporary solution, which not only addresses their immediate needs but also highlights the government’s focus on community well-being.
