SARIKEI (Nov 8): The construction of a new 17km road from Pasi to Tanjung Manis, which includes the 1.4km Batang Rajang Bridge, is progressing on schedule and is expected to be completed by March 2025, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Speaking at a press conference following the Stitching Ceremony for the Batang Rajang Bridge, Uggah expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the RM321 million project. He praised the Public Works Department (JKR) for their dedication in ensuring the timely completion of this important infrastructure development.
“I am very happy and grateful to JKR for their continued efforts in making sure the Batang Rajang Bridge and the road are completed as planned by March 2025. They have implemented a comprehensive work programme to ensure the project moves forward without delay,” Uggah said.
He also highlighted the significance of the Batang Rajang Bridge, which will be the third bridge crossing the Rajang River, joining the Lanang and Durin bridges. With the completion of this new road and bridge, Uggah assured that the travel time between Sarikei and Tanjung Manis will be reduced from the current two and a half hours to just 45 minutes.
“From Meradong to Tanjung Manis, travel time will be cut down to about 50 minutes, which is a huge improvement for the people in this area. This project will bring significant benefits to the local communities,” Uggah added.
The new road is part of the Coastal and Second Trunk Road initiative, designed to unlock new opportunities for the people of Sarawak. Uggah emphasized that while the project had faced some challenges, including delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the recovery has been strong, and the government is confident that the project will be completed on time.
“We are committed to ensuring the project stays on track, and even if any issues arise, we will find solutions to keep the momentum going,” Uggah concluded.
This infrastructure development is expected to have a transformative impact on the region, improving connectivity and fostering economic growth for the people of Sarikei and Tanjung Manis.
