KUCHING (Dec 13): A 10-foot female crocodile was successfully captured in the Semariang Batu river during the fourth day of Ops Nyah Buaya today, intensifying efforts to address public safety concerns in the area.
According to a Facebook post by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), the crocodile was caught using a baited hook and later culled as part of the ongoing crocodile population management programme.
This operation, spearheaded by SFC’s Swift Wildlife Action Team (SWAT), was initiated following reports of frequent crocodile sightings near residential areas, which raised fears among the local community.
Just two days ago, on Dec 11, the team captured and culled a massive 13-foot male crocodile at Kampung Samariang Batu, highlighting the significant presence of these reptiles in the region.
Residents living near the Semariang Batu river have expressed relief over the proactive measures taken by the authorities. “It is a necessary step to ensure our safety. These operations give us peace of mind,” said a Kampung Samariang Batu resident.
The SFC encourages the public to report any sightings of crocodiles to assist in their operations. Such reports have been crucial in identifying hotspots and ensuring rapid response by the SWAT team.
