KUCHING: The Operation Semut 1945 Parachute Landing (Ops Semut 1945) remains an unforgettable chapter in Sarawak’s history, marking a significant moment during and after World War II. The event played a crucial role in the resistance against the Japanese occupation in Sarawak and continues to be a source of pride for the state.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg emphasized the importance of preserving this historical memory. He highlighted the bravery and collaboration between local communities and security forces that led to a turning point in Sarawak’s fight against Japanese rule.

“This is a history that we must always remember. The cooperation between the local people and the security forces created a new chapter, particularly in Bario and among the Kelabit community,” he said.

Speaking at the 80th Commemoration Ceremony of the 1945 Operation Semut Parachute Landing at Padang Merdeka on Thursday, he acknowledged the lasting impact of the mission. He noted that the operation not only led to strategic advantages during wartime but also paved the way for long-term development in the Bario area.
“As mentioned by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala, the establishment of schools and other infrastructure in Bario was a direct result of this operation. This transformation has shaped the landscape of Bario and its people,” he added.
The parachute operation was instrumental in reshaping Sarawak’s post-war landscape, reinforcing unity, and promoting progress across the state. The commemoration event saw the presence of distinguished leaders, including Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.
Their attendance underscored the enduring significance of Ops Semut 1945, ensuring that the sacrifices made during this mission remain etched in Sarawak’s history for generations to come. – UKAS
