PETRA JAYA (17th August) – In a spectacular display of unity and sportsmanship, over 30,000 people gathered at the Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya for the grand opening ceremony of the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) last night. The event, marking the largest SUKMA ever held, drew supporters from across the nation, eager to witness the grand spectacle.

A Day of Anticipation and Festivities

Supporters began assembling as early as noon, determined to secure their spots for the highly anticipated event. The enthusiasm was palpable, as the crowd swelled under the hot sun and occasional rain showers. By 3 pm, the stadium compound was already packed, with spectators exploring the vibrant SUKMA Carnival. The carnival boasted over 110 stalls, offering a wide array of refreshments and food, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Pre-Show Performances Ignite the Crowd

As the evening approached, the energy in the stadium soared with a series of pre-show performances. Bintang RTM 2024 winner Roxy Izzy took the stage, captivating the audience with her powerful vocals. Local talent Ng Chien Chien and the charismatic Ramlez Walter followed, each delivering performances that further energized the crowd in anticipation of the main event.

Dignitaries Grace the Grand Occasion

The grand ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries, adding a sense of prestige to the occasion. The Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, accompanied by his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, made their entrance at 8:20 pm, receiving a warm welcome from the crowd. Just fifteen minutes later, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, arrived, further elevating the significance of the event.

Sarawak’s Contingent Leads the March

The highlight of the opening ceremony was undoubtedly the parade of athletes, with Sarawak’s contingent leading the charge. Led by their chef de mission, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, the Sarawak team consisted of 1,054 members, each proudly representing their state. The flag bearer, Dayang Lim Yee Sean, a bronze medalist in Taijiquan at the 8th World Junior Wushu Championship in 2022, carried the Sarawak flag with pride and determination, symbolizing the spirit of the games.

A Night Sky Lit Up with Drone Artistry

As the night progressed, the sky above the stadium was illuminated by a stunning drone light show, leaving the audience in awe. The drones painted the night sky with vibrant colors, displaying the themes of SUKMA XXI—“Semangat Perpaduan Membara” and Sarawak’s flag “Ibu Pertiwi.” The light show was a perfect blend of technology and tradition, symbolizing the unity and pride that the games aim to foster.

Star-Studded Performances Elevate the Evening

The entertainment continued with special performances by renowned artists Faizal Tahir, Jaclyn Victor, and Marsha Milan. Their performances were not just musical interludes but powerful expressions of national pride and cultural heritage, resonating deeply with the audience.

The Final Leg of the Torch Relay

A particularly poignant moment of the evening was the arrival of the torch, marking the final leg of its journey to the Stadium Sarawak. Led by the inspiring Kilat Boy, Daeloniel Mcdelon Bong, the torch had traveled all the way from northern Sarawak, symbolizing the journey and perseverance of the athletes who will compete in the games.

National Leaders in Attendance

The ceremony was further highlighted by the presence of Federal Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh and Sarawak’s Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. Their attendance underscored the importance of SUKMA XXI in promoting youth engagement, sportsmanship, and regional unity.

As the ceremony drew to a close, the atmosphere in the stadium was electric with excitement and anticipation for the days ahead.
