KUCHING, Jan 4 – The Padungan White Cat’s Chinese New Year-themed attire has sparked public debate, but Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng assures no disrespect was intended.
The festive outfit, introduced before Christmas, was part of preparations for a Lunar New Year music video centered on Padungan, one of Kuching’s oldest and most vibrant areas. The video, launched on Jan 2, aims to celebrate and promote local heritage and culture.
Mayor Wee explained during his recent ShallWeeTalk live session that the timing of the outfit change was aligned with the music video’s filming schedule. “The attire is symbolic of the upcoming celebrations. It represents respect for every festival celebrated in Sarawak’s diverse community,” he said.
Wee hinted at future plans to dress the White Cat in Aidilfitri-themed clothing, further highlighting Sarawak’s multicultural spirit.
Public Feedback on the White Cat’s Fierce Look
The mayor also addressed concerns about the cat statue’s appearance, particularly its “fierce-looking eyes.” Feedback from the public led MBKS staff to touch up the paint, which had worn off due to weathering. However, adjustments inadvertently made the cat’s eyes appear fiercer in photos.
Artist Gerald Goh was approached to give the statue a friendlier appearance, but rainy weather delayed the project.
Decorations and Unity in Sarawak
Mayor Wee highlighted that festive decorations in Kuching, especially in commercial areas, are frequently updated to reflect upcoming celebrations, even before one season ends. “Even the music in public areas has already shifted to Chinese New Year tunes,” he said.
Despite criticism, the mayor emphasized the importance of community feedback and maintaining Sarawak’s harmony. “We are open to listening and improving. Let us remain proud of our unity without allowing negativity to divide us,” he concluded.
