Palm Oil Waste Pond Catches Fire at MJM Factory in Bekenu

BEKENU, SARAWAK – A fire broke out at the MJM Factory’s palm oil waste sewage pond in Jalan Persisiran Pantai Bekenu, Niah, around 11:00 AM yesterday, causing concern among local workers and authorities.

Firefighters Rush to the Scene

Batu Niah PBT II Fire and Rescue Station Chief Rary Binjie confirmed that his team received the emergency call at 11:01 AM and immediately deployed a fire engine at 11:02 AM. Given the factory’s remote location, the team had to travel 27 kilometers before arriving at the scene at 11:29 AM.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the fire had spread over an area of 5,643.15 square metres within the sewage pond. Fortunately, MJM factory workers had already attempted to extinguish the flames using 50 fire extinguishers (APA) before the fire department arrived.

Efforts to Contain the Fire

A total of 30 factory workers joined the fire department in battling the blaze. They used:
✅ A 1,000-foot two-stream hose with two nozzles to fight the fire from the left side.
✅ A 1,800-foot single-stream hose with one nozzle to tackle the flames on the right side.
✅ Water from the MJM Sibuti Factory Fire Hydrant as the primary source.

The operation was led by PBK Operations Commander I Jeffery Majin, ensuring that all fire sources were eliminated.

Fire Successfully Extinguished

After thorough inspection, firefighters confirmed that no remaining embers could reignite the fire. The operation officially ended at 3:14 PM.

No Injuries Reported

Thankfully, there were no casualties in the incident. Authorities will continue monitoring the situation to prevent any recurrence.
