SARIKEI (Nov 21): A tragic accident along the Pan Borneo Highway near Sarikei has claimed the lives of eight individuals and injured two others. Police confirmed that the crash occurred when a Perodua Alza MPV, attempting to evade a police patrol inspection, veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a Hilux four-wheel drive.
Acting Sarikei Police Chief Supt Aswandy Anis revealed in a statement that the Perodua Alza, driven by a local man and carrying seven Indonesian passengers, was fleeing from police when it entered the opposing lane at the Simpang Bulat diversion. The collision took place at approximately 2:50 PM on the Sungai Nyelong Bridge, located at KM448 of the Betong-Sarikei-Meradong route.
“The driver and all seven passengers of the Perodua Alza were pronounced dead at the scene by Sarikei Hospital medical officers,” said Supt Aswandy. “The driver and passenger of the Hilux sustained minor injuries and are receiving treatment.”
The remains of the deceased have been sent to Sarikei Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Police are investigating the incident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
