KUCHING: The National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0 will officially launch in Sarawak at the Regiment 511 of the Territorial Army (AW) camp starting next year. The programme is being reintroduced with updated criteria to ensure the development of a new generation of disciplined, resilient, and patriotic Malaysians.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin revealed in a statement that PLKN 3.0 is designed to be inclusive, applying to all Malaysian citizens and permanent residents. Participants must be between the ages of 16 and 35 and meet specific physical and mental fitness standards for participation in the programme’s activities.

In a recent discussion in Dewan Rakyat, Mohamed Khaled responded to questions from Ahmad Johnie Zawawi (Gabungan Parti Sarawak – Igan), regarding the implementation of PLKN 3.0 in Sarawak and the trainee selection process. The Defence Minister explained that conscription will be conditional and based on meeting the programme’s set criteria.

PLKN 3.0 is structured with a balanced approach, focusing 70% on basic military training and 30% on nation-building components. This combination is intended to foster a generation of young individuals who are not only physically fit but also equipped with the values of civic responsibility and patriotism.
The aim of this updated PLKN programme is to cultivate a young generation that can face future challenges while serving as responsible citizens. Mohamed Khaled hopes the initiative will inspire discipline, resilience, and a strong sense of community among the youth.
With the launch set for next year, PLKN 3.0 promises to play a vital role in shaping Malaysia’s future, instilling the importance of both physical and mental strength while nurturing a deeper sense of national pride.
