KUCHING, Sept 14 – Sarawak’s calls for better federal deals, as highlighted by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, are not only justified but crucial for the development of the region, which is as vast and significant as Peninsular Malaysia. The Premier stressed that these requests are rooted in Sarawak’s constitutional rights and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), making the demands fair and necessary for the state’s progress.

In a speech delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian during a Thanksgiving Ceremony held at Sri Aman Civic Centre today, the Premier emphasized the importance of federal cooperation to ensure Sarawak’s development thrives alongside the rest of the nation.

The Call for Federal Cooperation: MA63 at the Core

Sarawak’s relationship with the federal government has always been shaped by the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), a historic agreement that safeguarded the rights and autonomy of the Bornean states of Sarawak and Sabah when forming Malaysia. The Premier reiterated that Sarawak’s requests for better deals are not mere aspirations but are deeply grounded in the legal framework set by the MA63.

“Sarawak’s requests from federal leaders are fair and rooted in the legal rights enshrined in the Constitution and MA63,” said Abang Johari in his speech.

By highlighting MA63, the Premier ensured that Sarawak’s claims to greater financial and infrastructural support from the federal government are seen as a constitutional entitlement, not just a political maneuver. Sarawak, as vast as the entire Peninsula Malaysia, requires specific attention and funding to develop its unique landscape and resources effectively.

The Importance of Fair Deals for Sarawak’s Growth

Abang Johari’s remarks emphasized the need for federal agreements that will enable Sarawak to reach its full potential. He conveyed his belief that improved cooperation with the federal government would allow for more comprehensive development plans.

“With better deals from the federal government through MA63, we will be able to develop Sarawak to its full potential,” he added.

The Premier’s focus on Sarawak’s immense size and unique needs compared to Peninsular Malaysia underscores why these fairer deals are essential. Sarawak’s geographic scale and diverse population call for infrastructure, resources, and policies tailored to the region’s specific demands.

Sarawak’s Development: A Commitment from GPS

Advocating for a Prosperous Future

The Premier assured the people of Sarawak that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government remains committed to advocating for a more prosperous future. By securing better deals from the federal government, GPS aims to ensure that Sarawak’s development is in tandem with the rest of the country.

“We will uphold the spirit of MA63 to safeguard Sarawak’s rights within the Federation of Malaysia at all times,” the Premier reiterated.

This strong commitment to the spirit of MA63 reflects the GPS government’s determination to not only ensure the well-being of Sarawak but also to contribute positively to the overall progress of Malaysia. The Premier stressed that the development of both Sarawak and Malaysia is a shared responsibility between state and federal governments.

Stability in Federal-State Relations

Sarawak’s leadership also recognizes the importance of maintaining stability in its relations with the federal government. This harmony is crucial for ensuring that Sarawak receives the necessary resources and support to thrive.

“The development and well-being of Sarawak and Malaysia is a shared responsibility,” Abang Johari pointed out.

The Premier’s remarks signal that, while Sarawak will assert its rights under MA63, it also values the importance of a stable and collaborative relationship with federal leaders.

Religious Harmony: Supporting Houses of Worship

GPS Government’s Support for Religious Institutions

At the Thanksgiving Ceremony, Abang Johari also highlighted the Sarawak government’s ongoing support for religious institutions through the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor). Unifor has been instrumental in funding and overseeing projects to support houses of worship for various religions across the state.

“Unifor has completed 778 projects worth RM100.4 million and is funding 623 more projects totaling RM148.9 million,” the Premier shared.

These projects include the construction of new buildings, maintenance work, repairs, renovations, and the procurement of essential religious equipment. The government’s continued financial commitment to religious institutions demonstrates Sarawak’s dedication to fostering religious harmony and ensuring that all faiths have access to well-maintained places of worship.

Ongoing Commitment to Religious Diversity

The Premier assured the public that the GPS government will continue to support religious institutions and honor its promise to uphold religious diversity in Sarawak.

“Rest assured, we will continue our support. This is our promise in GPS,” Abang Johari concluded.

This ongoing commitment further strengthens the social fabric of Sarawak, where various religions coexist peacefully, and the government plays an active role in ensuring that all communities have access to facilities that support their spiritual needs.

Conclusion: A Justified Call for Sarawak’s Development

Sarawak’s calls for better federal deals, rooted in the MA63, are essential for the region’s continued growth and prosperity. The Premier’s emphasis on legal rights and federal cooperation highlights the importance of Sarawak receiving fair treatment to develop in tandem with Peninsular Malaysia. Furthermore, the GPS government’s commitment to supporting religious diversity and maintaining stable relations with the federal government underscores the state’s vision of a prosperous and harmonious future.
