KUCHING, Feb 12 – The Malaysian federal government and the Sarawak government have reached a consensus on resolving the ongoing issues between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros). This decision ensures that neither party will lose their respective rights while fostering a fair and balanced outcome.
Malaysia’s Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke, highlighted the close cooperation between Putrajaya and Sarawak, affirming that no issue is too big to be resolved, including matters related to oil and gas.
“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has provided a thorough briefing to the Cabinet on this issue. The Cabinet has collectively agreed to resolve it in a way that ensures the interests of both parties are protected. It’s a win-win situation,” Loke said at a press conference in Kuching today.

Loke made this statement in the presence of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg after witnessing the signing of a Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) for the acquisition of MASwings between the Sarawak government and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG).
Sarawak Premier Abang Johari assured that the matter between PETRONAS and Petros is near resolution, with only minor misunderstandings due to misinformation.
“It’s a clear situation, only a grey area caused by wrong information,” he explained.
This development follows the recent clarification that PETRONAS remains the sole guardian of Malaysia’s oil and gas resources, including Sarawak’s, while recognising Petros as the state’s gas aggregator, except for liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Loke expressed optimism about the ongoing discussions, confident that they will lead to a positive outcome for both Sarawak and the nation.
“With time, I’m certain an agreement can be reached. Both the Sarawak Premier and the Prime Minister have the wisdom to manage this effectively. The upcoming announcement will reflect the win-win principle, benefiting all parties,” Loke added.
