MIRI (Dec 28): A homeowner’s swift action this morning prevented a potential disaster when his electric scooter caught fire at a residence on Jalan Pantai 4B, Taman Bayshore.
The Lutong Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reported that they received an emergency call around 10am and immediately dispatched a team to the scene, located about 10km from their Lutong station.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the homeowner had already used a portable fire extinguisher to tackle the flames. While most of the fire was extinguished, the scooter’s battery continued to emit smoke, prompting further action.
“The firefighters used water from the house’s water pipe to completely extinguish the fire and safely removed the battery,” the department said in a statement.
The fire caused only minor damage, with approximately 10% of the scooter affected. No injuries or significant damage to the property were reported.
Bomba personnel ensured the area was safe and the fire was fully extinguished before concluding their operation.
This incident highlights the importance of having a portable fire extinguisher at home, as the homeowner’s quick response minimized the risk of a larger fire.
Fire Safety Reminder for Electric Scooter Owners
As electric scooters become increasingly popular, users are reminded to regularly check their devices for signs of wear and tear, especially the battery. Overheating and improper charging are common causes of fires in such devices.
The public is also encouraged to equip their homes with portable fire extinguishers and smoke alarms to enhance preparedness in emergencies.
