Kuching’s New Hub for Unity and Inclusivity
KUCHING: The much-anticipated Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) Complex, located at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, is on the verge of completion, with a physical completion rate of 99.37%. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas confirmed that the RM80 million project is on track to be fully operational by the end of September, ensuring it aligns with the state’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
A Milestone in Sarawak’s Development Journey
The Unifor Complex, a significant investment for the state, represents Sarawak’s commitment to inclusivity and community development. During a recent site inspection, Uggah expressed confidence that the occupational permit (OP) will be issued on schedule. “We had set a target back in May to secure the OP by September. This visit is to ensure we are on track,” he stated to reporters.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite a minor setback of 0.33% in the construction timeline due to utility-related issues, these have now been resolved. The remaining tasks are focused on final fittings, indicating that the project is in the final stages of readiness. This swift recovery showcases the efficiency and determination of the project team, ensuring that Sarawakians will soon benefit from this state-of-the-art facility.

The Unifor Complex is designed to be more than just a building; it is envisioned as a hub for community engagement and religious harmony. Key features of the complex include:
- Main Hall: Capable of hosting up to 1,000 individuals, the hall can be expanded to accommodate 1,200 by opening the corridor, making it ideal for large gatherings and events.
- Shop Lots: Nine retail spaces will be available, promoting local entrepreneurship and enhancing community access to services.
- Office Tower: A nine-storey office tower will house administrative functions, further integrating the complex into the community’s daily life.
- Meeting Rooms: Multiple meeting spaces are designed to facilitate discussions and collaborations among various community groups.
- Rooftop Garden: This unique feature will provide a green space for relaxation and social interaction, contributing to the overall well-being of visitors.
Uggah also highlighted that the Unifor and Charitable Trust offices are expected to commence operations in the first quarter of 2025, furthering the complex’s role in community service and support.
Significance for Sarawak’s Future
Uggah emphasized the building’s role within the framework of Sarawak’s PCDS 2030. “This complex symbolizes our inclusivity policies under PCDS 2030 and serves as a point of pride for Sarawak. We hope Unifor will continue fostering unity as we strive to become a high-income region by 2030,” he asserted. This vision aligns with the state’s goals of economic growth, social cohesion, and enhanced living standards for all Sarawakians.
A Collaborative Effort
The successful completion of the Unifor Complex is a testament to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including government officials and community leaders. Present at the inspection were Sarawak Unifor Charitable Trust CEO John Kennedy Janang and COO Shimon William, who have played crucial roles in the project’s development and planning.
