KUCHING (Jan 30): Sarawak is on high alert as a massive 6.1-metre king tide is predicted to hit the state tomorrow evening at 6.49pm, raising concerns of severe flooding. The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak has issued warnings, urging residents, especially those in low-lying areas, to stay prepared.
The king tide, combined with continuous heavy rainfall, has heightened the risk of flooding across Sarawak. Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has assured residents that the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is closely monitoring flood-prone areas and has implemented contingency measures to address potential emergencies.
“I have instructed my team to be on standby and ready to respond immediately, even during public holidays. We will be patrolling low-lying areas tomorrow night to ensure the safety of residents,” said Wee during a Chinese New Year open house event at his residence earlier today.

The 6.1m king tide is also expected to occur again on Feb 1 at 7.24pm, further increasing the risk of flooding. Earlier today, Sarawak experienced a 6m king tide at 6.11pm, adding to the already critical situation.
According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), flooding has already displaced 6,565 people from 1,792 households across the state. A total of 47 temporary evacuation centres have been activated to provide shelter for those affected.
Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety advisories. Emergency response teams are on standby to assist those in need.
As Sarawak faces this dual threat of king tides and heavy rain, the community is reminded to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
