KUCHING – Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) is calling on regular and first-time blood donors to step forward, particularly those with type ‘O’ blood, to address a pressing shortage.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian highlighted the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the critical role blood donations play in saving lives.

“Type ‘O’ blood, while being the most common, is currently in short supply at SGH’s blood bank. This is concerning, as the lifespan of stored blood is only between seven to 10 days,” he explained during the inaugural community preparedness training at the Ang Cheng Ho Sports and Community Hall earlier today (Jan 21).

Dr Sim stressed the need for a consistent flow of donations due to the perishable nature of blood. “Blood is precious. We can’t overstock it, as unused blood will go to waste. It’s a resource that must be carefully managed,” he noted.

A Rare Occurrence in Sarawak

Dr Sim remarked that blood shortages are uncommon in Sarawak, contrasting the current situation with challenges faced decades ago. “In the past, hospitals often required patients to pay donors for blood. Today, we no longer face such issues, thanks to the generosity of our community,” he said.

Urgent Need for Emergency Supplies

The hospital urgently requires blood, particularly for emergencies involving surgeries, accidents, and other critical situations. Dr Sim explained the rigorous checks performed before donations to ensure the safety and quality of the blood.

He also encouraged regular donors to contact the hospital for appointments to streamline the donation process. “Every donation counts, and we rely on your generosity to ensure life-saving transfusions are available when needed,” he added.

How You Can Help

SGH invites all eligible donors, especially those with type ‘O’ blood, to visit the blood donation centre or call ahead to make an appointment. Together, we can save lives and support the healthcare system.
