Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, made the announcement during the opening ceremony of the Pulau Bruit Festival 2024. The event, held at the Rural Growth Centre (RGC) in Semop, Daro, was broadcast live on the Sarawak Public Communication Unit’s (Ukas) Facebook page, drawing attention to the State’s long-term development plans.

Reviving the Semop Fishermen’s Resettlement Housing Project

A Long-Delayed Project Receives New Life

One of the key announcements made by Abang Johari was the revitalisation of the Semop Fishermen’s Resettlement Housing Project, which had been stalled for years. The project, initially launched during his tenure as Sarawak’s Housing Minister, faced setbacks that left many of the houses in disrepair.

“The housing project for our fishermen was initiated when I was the Housing Minister,” said Abang Johari. “However, delays caused by Kuala Lumpur’s audit process resulted in the houses being left vacant for far too long.”

With the new allocation of RM5.6 million, the Sarawak government is set to repair the houses block by block. The restoration process will be managed by the Sarawak Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA), with the first block expected to be completed in six months.

A Commitment to Improving Living Conditions

The Premier highlighted that the restoration efforts are not just about repairing the housing units but also about enhancing the quality of life for the residents of Pulau Bruit.

“We aim to provide our residents, especially the fishermen, with a comfortable living environment,” said Abang Johari. “Sarawak’s future is very bright, and we are committed to improving the living standards for everyone.”

The entire project involves the restoration of 307 housing units, with the LCDA expected to continue the repair work over the coming months. Each block will be completed within a six-month timeframe, ensuring gradual yet steady progress.

Affordable Housing and Agricultural Development

RM45 Million Affordable Housing Scheme

In addition to the revitalisation of the fishermen’s housing project, the Sarawak government has also approved a RM45 million affordable housing scheme. This project aims to cater to the growing housing needs of the Pulau Bruit population, providing quality homes that are both affordable and sustainable.

The new housing scheme includes a 56-lot housing project, which is part of the State government’s broader efforts to provide better housing for the people of Sarawak. According to Abang Johari, the cost of land and construction will be borne by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.

“The houses we will build will be similar to those in Kampung Dato or Kemuyang in Sibu, and if we are building in Kuching, it will be like the houses in Sungai Bedaun,” said Abang Johari. “GPS will cover the RM10,000 deposit, and the residents will pay the rest.”

The Premier also reassured the residents that if further financial assistance is required, the Sarawak government would continue to step in, reiterating his belief in the bright future of Sarawak.

Supporting Local Agriculture

Alongside housing, Abang Johari also announced the construction of a new agricultural centre and food court in Pulau Bruit, valued at RM5 million. This initiative is expected to boost local agriculture by providing farmers with the necessary resources and infrastructure to improve productivity and access to markets.

The food court will serve as a hub for local traders and farmers to sell their produce, enhancing the local economy and promoting food security in the region.

A Brighter Future for Pulau Bruit

The Sarawak government’s investments in Pulau Bruit are a clear indication of its commitment to regional development and improving the lives of its people. With a total allocation of over RM55 million, the State is set to address long-standing infrastructure challenges, including housing and agriculture, that have hindered the growth of Pulau Bruit.

Fulfilling the Promise of Growth

The Premier concluded his speech by expressing his confidence in the future of Sarawak, pointing out that these investments are just the beginning of many more to come. He reiterated the government’s promise to reinvest its revenue into projects that would benefit the people of Sarawak, ensuring that no region is left behind.

As Sarawak continues to grow, the development of Pulau Bruit serves as a testament to the State’s commitment to improving the lives of its people, especially in rural and underserved areas.
