KUCHING (Nov 20): Sarawak is cementing its position as a leader in renewable energy with groundbreaking projects in biomass and solar power, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly, the Premier highlighted key achievements, including the state’s export of Napier grass biomass pellets. These pellets, produced by the world’s first large-scale Napier grass biomass manufacturer based in Sarawak, are already being supplied to the UK’s Drax Power Station, which has transitioned to 100% biomass fuel.

“Napier grass grows rapidly and requires minimal replanting, making it a sustainable resource. Beyond energy, it has applications in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), fertilisers, and animal feed, supporting a circular economy while boosting energy and food security,” he said.

Another milestone is the development of Malaysia’s largest floating solar facility, the 50MW Batang Ai Floating Solar Farm, which is set for completion by the end of 2024. This facility will integrate with the existing 108MW Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant. Additional floating solar projects are also underway at the Murum, Bakun, and Bengoh Dams, alongside ground-mounted solar systems in Baram, Mukah, and Kuching.

Sarawak is also addressing the challenges of solar intermittency through smart grid technology and energy storage systems. A proposed high-voltage green grid will connect renewable energy sources to key demand centres, ensuring stability and reliability.

“We are also exploring Pumped Storage Hydro systems to store excess energy for peak demand periods and reduce reliance on fossil fuels,” Abang Johari said.

Looking beyond 2030, Sarawak is exploring innovative renewable solutions like ocean energy systems and advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Twin to optimise energy infrastructure.

While renewable energy progresses, Sarawak remains committed to balancing its oil and gas contributions for socio-economic development and energy security.
