KUCHING (Dec 3): Sarawak’s vibrant heritage took center stage at the World Ikat Textiles Symposium, a four-day event held at the Baguio Convention and Cultural Centre, Philippines. The symposium, which began today, serves as a global platform for artisans, designers, scholars, and cultural enthusiasts to celebrate the rich artistry and cultural dimensions of ‘ikat’ weaving.

Led by Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Sarawak’s delegation aims to foster cultural exchange and promote the traditional craft of ‘ikat’ weaving on an international scale. The state is keen to share its expertise on weaving techniques, preservation strategies, and cultural diplomacy while solidifying its place in the global creative industry.

“Ikat, a traditional resist-dyeing technique, is an integral part of Sarawak’s heritage. Among the Iban community, for instance, the pua kumbu fabric embodies centuries of skilled craftsmanship and deep spiritual significance,” the ministry stated.

Sarawak, home to 34 ethnic groups, is a hub of diverse crafts, making its participation at the symposium a testament to its commitment to cultural preservation and innovation. This engagement opens up opportunities for heritage tourism and economic growth while building international ties.

The event showcases over 100 ‘ikat’ masterpieces from 20 countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan. Sarawak’s contribution, through the intricate and symbolic artistry of its textiles, strengthens global appreciation of this ancient art form and fosters new avenues for market access.

Deputy Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan, the ministry’s permanent secretary Datu Sherrina Hussaini, Sarawak Craft Council manager Suriya Charles, and other senior officials accompanied Abdul Karim on this meaningful cultural mission.
