The agreement was signed by State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, who is also AirBorneo’s chairman, while MAG was represented by its group managing director, Datuk Captain Izham Ismail.

Expanding Sarawak’s Connectivity

Abang Johari highlighted that AirBorneo will improve Sarawak’s domestic and international connectivity. The airline will initially focus on Rural Air Services (RAS) while gradually expanding to destinations within a four-to-five-hour radius. Future expansion may extend to Kalimantan and beyond.

As a full-service carrier, AirBorneo will establish strategic partnerships and code-sharing agreements with international airlines, including Malaysia Airlines, to broaden Sarawak’s global connectivity.

Boosting Sarawak’s Economy and Creating Jobs

The Premier stressed that AirBorneo will create diverse job opportunities, from customer service to advanced technical roles, promoting skills development and talent growth. The airline’s operations are expected to stimulate Sarawak’s economy by boosting tourism, attracting investments, and fostering business opportunities.

“By taking this strategic step, we are positioning Sarawak as an aviation hub for Borneo and a gateway to ASEAN,” he said. “This will bring new opportunities and improved accessibility for our local communities and businesses.”

Commitment to Rural Air Services

Abang Johari reassured that AirBorneo remains committed to serving underserved areas in Sarawak and Sabah. The airline will continue providing Rural Air Services to ensure remote communities stay connected to the rest of the world.

The Sarawak government will collaborate with MAG to ensure a seamless transition and maintain high service standards. Training programmes will be introduced to upskill local talent and drive innovation in the aviation industry.

With the launch of AirBorneo, Sarawak is poised to become a significant player in the regional aviation sector, bringing better air connectivity, more tourism, and new business opportunities to the region. — The Borneo Post
