KUCHING, 6 April 2025 – Sarawak is stepping up its game in regional sports development as it aims to host boxing events during the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, while also planning the construction of Borneo’s first velodrome in Kuching.
The bold vision was shared by Sarawak’s Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, during the Aidilfitri 2025 Hospitality Ceremony jointly organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts (MTCP) and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) at a local hotel on Sunday.
“Sarawak is gaining momentum in boxing, especially after strong performances at SUKMA. If possible, we want to host boxing here during the SEA Games 2027. The support from local fans gives our athletes a huge psychological edge,” he said.

He also mentioned that possible venues being considered for the boxing matches include Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya and the Sri Aman Indoor Stadium, though the final decision will depend on the national boxing association.
In a bigger move to boost Sarawak’s status as a regional sports hub, Dato Sri Abdul Karim announced plans to build a new velodrome in Kuching, which will be the first of its kind on the island of Borneo. The facility is expected to have a capacity for 3,000 to 4,000 spectators.
“This will be more than just a cycling venue. It will also be used for community events, meetings, and other sports. It’s going to be a true multi-purpose facility,” he added.
To date, Sarawak has been confirmed to host 18 out of 36 sports in the upcoming SEA Games. Other sports likely to be held in the state include swimming, diving, tenpin bowling, archery, and shooting.
The state government is optimistic that its active role in SEA Games 2027 will elevate Sarawak as a top-tier destination for sports in Southeast Asia. — UKAS EDITION
