KUCHING, Jan 13 – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced the State’s highly anticipated takeover of MASwings airline, with the official signing ceremony set to happen within the next month.
Speaking to reporters after delivering his keynote address at the Majlis Amanat Perdana at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today, the Premier confirmed that discussions with Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) on asset valuations have concluded successfully.
“This means we are taking over, and soon there will be a signing (ceremony). It will happen within a month, before Ramadan. Possibly in Kuching,” he shared.
A New Chapter for Sarawak Aviation
The takeover is a significant step for Sarawak, marking the first time the State will own an airline, with plans to strengthen connectivity within the region and beyond.
While many are eager to learn the new name for the airline, Abang Johari said the announcement will be made post-signing. On the financial aspects, he assured that the acquisition is being completed at a mutually agreed price between both parties.
MASwings, currently a subsidiary of MAG, operates flights across rural and remote areas of Sarawak and Sabah, providing essential connectivity for locals and tourists. The State’s acquisition is expected to enhance service efficiency, improve routes, and potentially introduce more competitive fares.
Boosting Sarawak’s Growth and Tourism
The acquisition aligns with Sarawak’s broader development goals, aiming to improve accessibility and support tourism, commerce, and local businesses.
This takeover signals an ambitious move for Sarawak to chart its own path in aviation, further empowering the State’s economy.
As the signing date draws closer, residents eagerly await more details, including the airline’s new name and future expansion plans.
