KUCHING: Sarawak has once again proven its dominance in national sports by clinching the overall champion titles in both the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and Para SUKMA 2024, a feat that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg proudly acknowledged during the 9th Sarawak Hornbill Tourism Awards.
Speaking at the event held at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre on Sept 27, Abang Johari shared his excitement over the state’s monumental success. “Tonight, it has been confirmed that Sarawak is the champion for the Para SUKMA. We have secured more than 80 gold medals, and our target of 83 is within reach. With this, Sarawak has met its goal, claiming the overall champion title in both Games,” he said, after reviewing the latest results.
This achievement, according to Abang Johari, is a testament to Sarawak’s commitment not only to sports but also to the development of its infrastructure and cultural presence. He emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the state’s infrastructure, particularly in the performing arts. “Sarawak is at the forefront of Malaysia’s performing arts scene, and our cultural presentations, such as during the SUKMA opening ceremony, have garnered widespread attention,” he added.
As of Sept 27, Sarawak has secured an impressive 82 gold medals in the Para SUKMA, while Sabah trails with 62 golds. Nine more medals are set to be contested in lawn bowls, marking the final push before the Games conclude.
