KUCHING – Creativity, hard work, and environmental love all came together at Kampung Haji Baki recently as women participants proudly celebrated their success in the “Women Empowerment: Upcycled Textile Products” program. The graduation event was graced by YB Dato Lo Khere Chiang, accompanied By Gerald Goh and Village Chief. YB Dato Lo Khere Chiang, praised the women for their dedication and creativity throughout the 4-month program, from November 2024 to February 2025.
This inspiring program was organized in collaboration with Worming Up, a local group that champions sustainable living through creative education. The main goal of the program was simple — turn used jeans into beautiful craft items. But along the way, the participants learned much more than just sewing and crafting. They discovered how old items can have new life and new value with a little imagination and skill.
The atmosphere at the ceremony was lively and filled with pride as the women showcased their completed projects. From stylish bags to decorative home items, every piece told a story of patience, creativity, and passion. Dato Lo expressed his admiration, saying every stitch and cut reflected the participants’ hidden talents and strong community spirit.

Besides creativity, the program also taught important lessons about environmental awareness. By upcycling, the women not only reduced waste but also showed how small changes can protect the earth. This fits well with Sarawak’s vision for a greener future.
Dato Lo also took time to thank the educators and trainers who worked tirelessly to guide the women throughout the program. He highlighted that their patience and support had opened new opportunities for the participants, giving them confidence to explore more creative ventures in the future.
As the ceremony ended, Dato Lo gave one final message to the participants: “Don’t stop here. Keep creating. Use what you learned to build your own small businesses and contribute to Sarawak’s creative economy.”
With this successful program, Kampung Haji Baki has proven that empowerment and sustainability can go hand in hand. It is a strong reminder that even small villages can lead big changes when creativity meets opportunity.
