KUCHING (Sept 11) – The independent film ‘Love Crush’ is making waves in Sarawak’s creative industry by employing a production crew comprising 80 per cent Sarawakians. This milestone highlights the state’s growing reputation in the film sector and showcases its commitment to nurturing local talent, according to Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts.

Sarawak’s Talent Takes the Spotlight in ‘Love Crush’

In a press conference held yesterday, Datuk Snowdan Lawan praised the production team for its efforts in putting Sarawakian talent at the forefront of the film industry. He emphasized that such initiatives are crucial for promoting Sarawak’s capabilities on a global stage.

“I am delighted to see Sarawak attracting experienced industry professionals, such as ‘Love Crush’ director Johan Chairil, who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise with our local talents and production crew,” said Snowdan.

Promoting Sarawak’s Creative Ecosystem

Snowdan highlighted the importance of collaborations in nurturing the state’s creative ecosystem, providing homegrown talents the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals. He stressed that the state government is dedicated to empowering Sarawakian talents by creating avenues for growth and skill development.

“We don’t want our talents to only remain in Sarawak. They should aim to go beyond, nationally and internationally,” Snowdan added.

The production of ‘Love Crush’ is managed by Teeb TV Networks Sdn Bhd and Hamsa Media PLT. The film features local Sarawakian talents like Joshua James, Agnes Jabin, and Rowena Jala, with key scenes shot at various iconic locations across Kuching and Bau.

Support for Sarawak’s Creative Industry

The state government recognizes the immense potential within Sarawak’s creative industry and is committed to providing the necessary resources, infrastructure, and platforms to empower local talents. Snowdan urged creative industry members, particularly those in the film sector, to apply for available grants from his ministry to support their initiatives.

“The state government recognises the immense potential within our state and are dedicated to provide the necessary resources, infrastructure, and platforms available to empower our creative talents,” he said.

Sarawak as a Premier Film Destination

Director Johan Chairil expressed his excitement about Sarawak’s potential as a film location, citing the state’s stunning natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and diverse communities as ideal settings for filmmakers. Johan’s enthusiasm underlines the increasing appeal of Sarawak as a unique filming destination, which could draw more international film projects to the state.

“Sarawak, with its breathtaking natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and diverse communities, offers incredible opportunities for filmmakers. By showcasing the beauty and unique character of Sarawak, we hope to inspire more filmmakers to explore this remarkable destination,” Johan said.

Having commuted between Tokyo, Japan, and Kuching since January to develop the project, Johan has seen firsthand the potential that Sarawak offers to the global film industry.

‘Love Crush’ Expected to Premiere Next Year

Filming for ‘Love Crush’ began on September 1 and is expected to conclude by the end of this month. The film is set to premiere next year, adding another feather to the cap of Sarawak’s blossoming film industry.

Snowdan’s encouragement to aspiring filmmakers and his emphasis on supporting creative projects underscore the state’s commitment to becoming a key player in the film industry. By leveraging local talent and showcasing Sarawak’s unique locations, ‘Love Crush’ serves as a testament to the state’s growing influence in the global creative scene.
