MIRI: A sauna room at a prominent hotel in Miri caught fire this evening, causing panic among guests and staff. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.
A spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre (PGO) stated that they received an emergency call about the incident at approximately 6.41 pm.
Following the report, a response team from the Miri Central Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched to the location, situated just six kilometres from the station.

Fire Contained by Hotel Staff and Safety System
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered thick smoke emanating from the hotel’s gymnasium area.
“Initial findings indicate that the fire started inside the sauna room. Two hotel employees acted quickly and managed to extinguish the flames using two fire extinguishers,” the spokesperson said in an official statement today.
Adding to the response, the hotel’s sprinkler system was activated, further assisting in controlling the fire.
Firefighters Conduct Final Inspection
Firefighters conducted a thorough inspection of the sauna room to identify the cause of the fire and ensure that all embers were completely extinguished. The operation was declared over at 8.00 pm.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire, but preliminary assessments suggest an electrical fault or overheating may have been contributing factors.
No Injuries, But Investigations Continue
Fortunately, no guests or staff were harmed in the incident. The management of the hotel has assured guests that safety measures are in place and that the sauna facility will remain closed until further notice.
The Fire and Rescue Department urges businesses and hotels to ensure regular maintenance of electrical appliances and fire safety systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.
