KUCHING, March 21 – A recent joint operation by Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO) and the police uncovered illegal electricity tapping at a double-storey terrace house along Jalan Kong Ping, Kuching. The operation, aimed at curbing electricity theft, found direct tapping cables bypassing the meter, leading to serious legal consequences for those involved.
According to a statement from Sarawak Energy, the illegal cables were seized as evidence, and investigations are ongoing under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance. If convicted, offenders could face fines of up to RM200,000 and/or five years in prison.
Increasing Cases of Electricity Theft in Kuching
This latest case marks the sixth direct tapping incident recorded in Kuching in 2024 alone, with estimated financial losses of around RM50,000. Despite continuous enforcement efforts, illegal power connections remain a concern, highlighting the need for stricter monitoring and public awareness.

“Electricity theft is a serious criminal offence with severe safety risks. Illegal connections increase the chances of electrical fires, electrocution, and power disruptions, endangering both the perpetrators and nearby residents,” the statement warned.
Landlords Also at Risk of Legal Action
Sarawak Energy reminded property owners and landlords to ensure their tenants comply with electricity regulations, as they too could be held responsible if illegal activities occur on their premises.
To combat electricity theft more effectively, enforcement teams are working closely with the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak and the police. Equipped with advanced tools and training, these teams conduct regular joint operations to detect illegal connections, including meter tampering and direct tapping.
