SANDAKAN (Jan 26): A sightseeing trip turned tragic when six Chinese tourists sustained minor injuries, and the 63-year-old bus driver was seriously injured after their coach skidded on Jalan Lintas Sibuga near a supermarket earlier today.

The Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief, Severinus Sainkui, stated that the incident occurred around 9:15 am. The bus, carrying 17 Chinese nationals, including four children, was on a sightseeing tour when the accident took place.

“An emergency call was received via the MERS 999 hotline. A fire engine and eight personnel were dispatched to the scene, located 10 kilometres from the fire station,” Severinus said in a statement.

Passersby assisted the injured individuals and transported them to the Duchess of Kent Sandakan Hospital for treatment before the rescue team arrived.

The rescue team also worked to clean an oil spill at the accident site to ensure road safety. Using water from the fire engine tank, they completed the clean-up operation, and the area was declared safe at 10:42 am.

While investigations are ongoing, authorities have urged drivers to remain vigilant, especially during wet weather, to prevent similar incidents.

This unfortunate accident serves as a reminder to prioritize road safety during travels, particularly on sightseeing tours involving large vehicles.
