KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5: The Social Welfare Department (JKM) has assured the public that there are enough food supplies for flood victims staying at temporary relief centres (PPS) in Sabah and Sarawak.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that JKM has prepared food supplies at two disaster relief depots, one state warehouse, 33 district warehouses, eight mini depots, and 32 forward bases to ensure swift assistance to affected areas.

“To ensure the well-being and comfort of flood victims, JKM has activated 332 PPS in Sabah and 657 in Sarawak. These centres have the capacity to accommodate up to 331,343 victims across both states,” she shared during a special chamber session in Dewan Rakyat.

The motion on flood and landslide disasters in Sabah and Sarawak was initially raised by Chiew Choon Man (PH-Miri) after the question and answer session. Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor later referred the motion for discussion in the Special Chamber.

Nancy also highlighted that the District and State Disaster Management Committees have been directed to ensure that essential supplies reach flood victims without delay. The 332 PPS in Sabah and 657 PPS in Sarawak are equipped with adequate facilities to provide a safe and comfortable environment.

The total strength of personnel involved includes 14,209 in Sabah and 24,757 in Sarawak. Various assets such as lorries, four-wheel drive vehicles, amphibious boats, and ambulances have been placed in strategic locations for efficient disaster response.

Additionally, the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) has instructed Division Disaster Management Committees to streamline and speed up the registration process for affected households. This step aims to avoid delays in distributing “wang ehsan” (compassionate aid) to eligible recipients.

“District-level agencies are actively identifying household heads affected by the floods. All eligible recipients will soon receive aid from the federal government through their respective state governments,” Nancy assured.
