KUCHING – The much-anticipated Tematu Gawai Carnival 2024 and the 9th Edition of Bitanding Dayung Gawea Tematu 2024 are scheduled to take place on June 28 and 29 at the Kampung Tematu Multipurpose Hall. This year’s theme, “Jak Ndi Otin, Samah To Kayak Adat Bidoyoh,” translates to “We Must Together Preserve Bidayuh Customs With One Heart,” emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation and unity among the Bidayuh community.

Day One: June 28
The carnival will kick off at 1 pm with the Miss Talent Competition and Miss Best Contemporary Dress. Performances by the Tanju Budaya Singai Cultural Group will set the stage for an exciting day. The evening will see the announcement of winners for the Bitanding Onak Dayung Gawea Tematu 2024 and Bitanding Sindok Gawea Tematu 2024 competitions.
Day Two: June 29
The second day will be bustling with exhibitions from both government and non-government agencies. Attendees can participate in a blood donation campaign, health and dental check-ups, and enjoy various food, drink, and handicraft stalls. Fitness enthusiasts can join a Zumba session, and there will be traditional games to engage all visitors.
The Beauty Pageant Competitions
A significant highlight of the Tematu Gawai Carnival is the beauty pageant, featuring three main competitions:
Bitanding Dayung Gawea Tematu 2024
Nine finalists will compete in this prestigious event, which is the centerpiece of the carnival. The competition will feature performances by The Ring Lady, Prucong Group, Bung Bratak Culture Group, Bulang Biliah Group, and Onak Dayung Gawea Tematu 2024. The winners will be announced in the evening, with the first-place winner receiving RM2,000 in cash, a crown, flowers, a sash, a trophy, a hamper, and a certificate.
Special titles, including Miss Talent, Miss Tourism, Miss Popularity, Miss Photogenic, Miss Best Costume, Miss Best Contemporary Dress, and Miss Traditional, will each receive RM400 in cash, a trophy, and a sash.
Sindok Gawea Tematu 2024
Six finalists will vie for the top spot in the Sindok Gawea Tematu 2024 competition. The first-place winner will be awarded RM1,500 in cash, a crown, flowers, a sash, a trophy, a hamper, and a certificate.
Onak Dayung Gawea Tematu 2024
Ten finalists will compete in the Onak Dayung Gawea Tematu 2024 category, with the first-place winner receiving RM500 in cash, a crown, flowers, a sash, a trophy, a hamper, and a certificate.
Encouraging Traditional Attire
Visitors to the carnival are encouraged to don traditional ethnic attire, adding to the vibrant cultural atmosphere. Prizes will be awarded for the best traditional attire, celebrating the beauty and diversity of Bidayuh fashion.
