PENAMPANG: Three local men were arrested for allegedly stealing Telekom Malaysia (TM) cables in Penampang. The police, in collaboration with TM staff, launched an operation after receiving a tip-off about suspicious activities along Jalan Penampang Baru.
Penampang District Police Chief, Superintendent Sammy Newton, stated that the operation, conducted at around 11 am on Thursday, led to the successful arrest of the suspects, aged between 23 and 30.

“The police seized several items, including Telekom cables and iron cutters, believed to have been used in the theft,” said Superintendent Sammy Newton.
In an initial urine test, all three suspects tested positive for Methamphetamine and Amphetamine, raising concerns about their involvement in drug-related activities.
Legal Consequences
The case is currently under investigation under Section 431A of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentence of up to two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Additionally, the suspects are being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a maximum fine of RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to two years if convicted.
Public Urged to Report Crime
Superintendent Sammy Newton urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to crime or drug abuse to the nearest police station. He emphasized that community cooperation is crucial in maintaining safety and security in Penampang.
