SIBU (Jan 21): A toy shop owner and her employee were arrested during Op Laras in Sibu after police seized 60 fake firearms worth RM35,000 at their shop in Wisma Sanyan on Monday afternoon.
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the arrests took place at 2.30pm following a raid prompted by complaints and information about imitation firearms being sold in the area.
“A team of policemen raided and inspected a toy shop in Wisma Sanyan, where they discovered 25 fake pistols and 35 fake rifles inside the premises,” he said during a press conference today.

The shop owner, a 45-year-old woman, and her 29-year-old male employee were taken into custody. The case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which prohibits the possession, sale, or purchase of imitation firearms.
ACP Zulkipli reminded the public about the legal implications of owning or dealing in fake firearms. “Anyone convicted under this section faces a maximum one-year jail sentence, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both,” he stated.
He also urged members of the public to report any information regarding the sale of imitation firearms to the police to ensure further action is taken.
This state-wide operation highlights the authorities’ commitment to curbing the illegal circulation of fake firearms, which can potentially lead to public safety concerns.
