Fire Breaks Out in Kampung Muara Bunut

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received a distress call around 9:20 am, alerting them to the fire. Firefighters from the Bintangor Fire Station (BBP) were promptly dispatched to the scene to tackle the raging flames that threatened to spread further in the densely populated area.

Operation Commander Nicholas Belulin led the response team and confirmed that the fire involved three wooden houses, each measuring approximately 20×20 square feet. The intensity of the fire quickly consumed the structures, reducing them to ashes within minutes.

No Casualties Reported, But Families Devastated

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, as none of the occupants were at home during the incident. However, the loss of property has left 12 individuals without a roof over their heads, struggling to come to terms with the sudden and tragic turn of events.

Speaking to the media, Nicholas Belulin expressed relief that no lives were lost but acknowledged the emotional and financial toll the fire has taken on the affected families. “It’s a heartbreaking situation. While we are thankful there were no injuries, the families have lost everything they owned,” he said.

Community Rallies to Support Fire Victims

The local community has rallied around the affected families, offering temporary shelter, food, and essential items. Neighbors and local organizations have started donation drives to help the victims rebuild their lives, emphasizing the spirit of togetherness and support that defines Sarawakian communities.

YB Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, the Meradong assemblyman, visited the site of the fire to provide moral support to the victims. He pledged to assist the families in securing temporary accommodation and accessing government aid to ease their burden during this challenging time.

“We are coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure that the affected families receive immediate assistance. It is crucial that they get the help they need to get back on their feet,” Datuk Ding said during his visit.

Bomba’s Quick Response Prevents Further Damage

The quick response by the Bomba team helped contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby houses. The firefighters battled the blaze for nearly an hour before it was fully extinguished, ensuring that no further damage occurred in the tightly packed village.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, though the exact cause is still under investigation. Authorities have urged residents to take extra precautions with electrical appliances and wiring, especially in older wooden structures that are more susceptible to fire.

Fire Safety Awareness: A Growing Need in Sarawak

This incident highlights the growing need for increased fire safety awareness in Sarawak, particularly in rural and semi-rural areas where traditional wooden houses are still prevalent. Bomba Sarawak has reiterated its commitment to conducting fire safety education and outreach programs to inform the public about fire prevention measures.

Bomba spokesperson urged residents to regularly check their electrical appliances and wiring, install smoke detectors, and have an evacuation plan in place. “Simple preventive measures can save lives and properties. We cannot stress enough the importance of fire safety, especially in densely populated villages like Kampung Muara Bunut,” he said.

How You Can Help the Victims

Those wishing to contribute to the relief efforts can donate essential items such as clothing, food, and household goods at the local community center in Meradong. Monetary donations are also being accepted by local charity organizations that are working closely with the affected families.

The Kampung Muara Bunut fire is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that exist within our communities and the importance of being prepared for such unforeseen disasters. As Sarawak continues to grow, ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents must remain a priority.
