MIRI (Aug 13): A tragic accident occurred this morning in Kampung Long Tuma, Lawas, when 56-year-old Ricky Siring lost his life after falling from a wooden crossing into a stream behind his orchard. The incident has shocked the local community and highlighted concerns over safety in rural areas.

The Incident

At approximately 8:38 a.m., the Lawas fire station received an urgent distress call about a person who had fallen into a stream. The fire station chief, Azman Ibrahim, promptly assembled a rescue team and headed to the scene.

“Upon receiving the call, a team of personnel from Lawas fire station led by myself rushed to the scene,” Azman Ibrahim reported. “When we arrived, the team went straight into the stream to remove the body. He was pronounced dead by paramedics from Lawas Hospital.”

Circumstances Leading to the Accident

Ricky Siring had gone to his orchard early this morning to collect fruits, a routine task he had performed many times before. However, this time, the wooden crossing over the stream, which had served him well in the past, became the site of a tragic accident. It is believed that Ricky slipped while walking on the crossing, leading him to fall into the stream.

According to Azman Ibrahim, “Ricky was carrying a large basket with him when the incident occurred.” This may have contributed to his loss of balance, making the fall even more devastating.

Discovery and Rescue Efforts

Ricky’s son made the grim discovery at around 7:40 a.m., finding his father unconscious by the stream. Immediate efforts were made to provide assistance, but unfortunately, Ricky was already in critical condition.

“The body has been handed over to police for further action,” Azman Ibrahim added. “The operation concluded at 10:20 a.m.” The swift response from the fire station and medical team underscores the seriousness with which such emergencies are handled in the region.

Community Impact and Safety Concerns

This incident has left the local community in mourning and has brought to light the need for improved safety measures. Wooden crossings, often a common feature in rural areas, may pose significant risks, especially during adverse weather conditions or when in disrepair.

Local authorities and community leaders are urged to review safety protocols for such crossings and consider measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Enhanced maintenance and the installation of safety barriers could play a crucial role in preventing accidents like this.

Final Thoughts

The loss of Ricky Siring is a tragic reminder of the risks inherent in daily tasks and the importance of ensuring safety in all aspects of life. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time. As the investigation continues, the community remains hopeful for improvements that will safeguard against such incidents in the future.
