PETRA JAYA, 19th December: The funeral of Nurul Asikin Lan, 28, a murder victim whose case has gripped the nation, was held amidst a heart-wrenching atmosphere at the Semariang Islamic Cemetery today.
Around 500 family members, friends, and well-wishers gathered to bid farewell to Nurul Asikin, also known as Amoy, as her body was safely buried at 1.00 pm. Her body arrived at the Raudhatul Sakinah Complex within the cemetery grounds at 12.30 pm. A prayer session at the surau preceded her final journey, aligning with the Zohor prayer.
The sombre gathering came a day after Kuching District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, confirmed the identity of the decomposed body found in a Tabuan Jaya drain on Sunday. DNA test results verified that the remains belonged to Nurul Asikin, who was reported missing on December 5 after meeting a man she had recently acquainted with.
The prime suspect, a man in his 20s, was arrested on Saturday and led the authorities to the location where the victim’s body was abandoned. Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata revealed that the suspect confessed to committing the crime for financial gain, intending to pawn the victim’s jewellery—a gold bracelet and earrings—to fund his trip to Cambodia to watch the Malaysia-Cambodia match in the 2024 Mitsubishi Electric ASEAN Cup tournament.
The suspect’s remand is set to end on December 22 as investigations continue. The tragic incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice across the community.
Nurul Asikin’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of her family and friends. May her soul rest in peace.
