MARUDI, Jan 17: Baram is set to undergo a remarkable transformation as the Sarawak government prioritises upgrading road connectivity to Long Terawan, Long Iman, and eventually Limbang under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). The completion of the Marudi Bridge marks a significant milestone in this effort.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted the importance of completing this road network, which will transform Baram from a remote region into a vital hub. Speaking at the inauguration of Marudi Bridge, Abang Johari stressed, “With seamless road accessibility supported by 13MP and the Northern Regional Development Agency, new economic opportunities will emerge across the region.”

The Premier praised the collaboration among Baram MP Anyi Ngau, Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala, Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, and Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau, which he credited for advancing development in the area.

Road connectivity will also enhance tourism access to Unesco World Heritage sites like Mulu and Niah national parks. “Tourists visiting Miri will have the chance to explore Baram’s unique attractions, boosting local tourism spending,” Abang Johari added.
Another exciting development is the construction of a seven-kilometre deep-sea port in Kuala Baram, aimed at attracting cruise ships with 2,000 to 3,000 passengers. This port is expected to further elevate Sarawak’s tourism industry and economy.
The Premier also encouraged modern agriculture practices, including high-tech paddy cultivation, to improve food security and reduce dependence on rice imports. He emphasised the need for innovation in infrastructure and agriculture, stating, “Adopting high technology is key for Sarawak to flourish and prosper.”
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and other dignitaries attended the event, reaffirming the government’s commitment to infrastructure development in Sarawak.
