KOTA MARUDU, March 27 – Two friends had a terrifying near-death experience when their vehicle was swept away by strong currents while crossing a low concrete bridge at Kampung Sungai Simpangan on Wednesday night.
Kota Marudu Fire and Rescue Station Chief Mohd Hasbi Hajat said a rescue team was dispatched immediately after receiving a distress call from the public at 9:00 PM.

“Upon arrival, we saw a man clinging to the roof of a Toyota Vigo pickup truck. A rescue operation was launched using ropes and special tools to bring him to safety,” said Mohd Hasbi.

After being rescued, the survivor informed authorities that his friend had gone missing while trying to escape from the vehicle. This prompted an urgent search and rescue (SAR) operation along the riverbank.
Fortunately, within minutes, rescue personnel located the second victim alive near the riverbank. Both men were immediately given medical treatment by the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) at the scene.
The entire operation concluded safely by 10:24 PM, with no injuries or casualties reported.
Flood Dangers in Kota Marudu
Heavy rains in Sabah, particularly in Kota Marudu, have led to rising water levels, increasing the risk of flash floods and strong currents in low-lying areas. Authorities have reminded residents to avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges to prevent similar incidents.
The Fire and Rescue Department urges the public to be extra cautious and to seek alternative routes during bad weather. If trapped in floodwaters, people should immediately call 999 for assistance.
