LUNDU: A devastating fire broke out at a workers’ housing area in Lundu yesterday evening, leaving two Indonesian workers, aged 20 and 22, with injuries and burns. The fire involved six housing units, sparking an urgent response from the local fire department.
According to the Sarawak Operations Centre, the victims sustained burns to their legs, while one also suffered from smoke inhalation. A spokesperson reported that the Lundu Fire and Rescue Department received the emergency call at 6.45 pm and quickly dispatched a team to the site.
“The other 12 occupants of the housing, a mix of locals and Indonesians, were unharmed,” said the spokesperson.
The firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze, using a 400-foot water stream sourced from an open area nearby. The team took more than two hours to completely extinguish the fire, which was successfully put out by 10.20 pm.
After ensuring the area was secure and no further fires could reignite, the firefighters concluded their operation and returned to the station.
The incident highlights the critical need for enhanced safety measures in workers’ housing areas to prevent such tragedies in the future. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
