KUCHING – In a momentous development for Sarawak and Malaysia’s parliamentary landscape, Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah following his appointment as the 21st President of Dewan Negara.

A Proud Moment for Sarawak

Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi expressed his joy and pride at the selection of another distinguished Sarawakian for such a prestigious role. This appointment comes at a significant time, marking an important date in Sarawak’s history.

“I am indeed thrilled to witness the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s decision to appoint a Sarawakian leader for this esteemed position. It is a proud moment for us all,” Wan Junaidi said in a statement today.

The appointment of Awang Bemee is particularly notable as it aligns with the anniversary of Sarawak’s attainment of self-government on July 22, 1963, which occurred just before the formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963. This alignment underscores the historical significance of this new role.

Awang Bemee’s Legacy and Future

At 65 years old, Awang Bemee brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his new position. His appointment follows the passing of the late Senator Datuk Mutang Tagal, who served as Senate President until his death on May 10 due to heart complications.

Awang Bemee was officially sworn in as a Senator at the Dewan Negara on July 15, 2024. His nomination was put forward by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, reflecting confidence in his capabilities and leadership.

As a former Senate president, Wan Junaidi expressed hope that Awang Bemee would continue the momentum of parliamentary reforms and uphold the integrity of the Senate. “I trust that Awang Bemee will build on the efforts I initiated, particularly regarding parliamentary reforms and enhancing the check-and-balance mechanisms of our government,” he added.

Continuing the Tradition of Leadership

Awang Bemee’s appointment is seen as a continuation of Sarawak’s influential role in Malaysia’s national governance. His leadership is anticipated to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of parliamentary proceedings and contributing to the effective functioning of the Dewan Negara.

The position of Senate President carries with it substantial responsibility, and Awang Bemee’s seasoned experience is expected to bring renewed vigor and commitment to the Senate’s operations. His extensive background in politics and governance positions him well to address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Looking Forward

As Sarawak and Malaysia embrace this new chapter, the significance of Awang Bemee’s appointment resonates deeply with the region’s historical and political landscape. His role as the President of Dewan Negara will not only influence parliamentary processes but also reflect Sarawak’s enduring contribution to Malaysia’s political framework.

With the support of his peers and the continued efforts of leaders like Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi, Awang Bemee is poised to make a meaningful impact in his new role. The future looks bright as Sarawak continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia’s governance and democratic processes.
