KUCHING, Oct 31: The newly completed Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) Complex at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee stands as a proud testament to Sarawak’s unique harmony and religious unity, officially receiving its occupation permit (OP) from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) on Wednesday. This iconic building symbolises the state’s commitment to fostering respect and unity across diverse faiths, a value cherished by Sarawakians.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas highlighted the symbolic importance of the UNIFOR Complex, calling it a “beacon of unity” that showcases Sarawak’s collective spirit of inclusivity. “This complex is not just a building but a symbol of the unity we hold dear in Sarawak. It is our pride, our shared home—let’s make the best of it,” said Uggah during the OP handover ceremony to the UNIFOR Trust Board.
Representing the values of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government, UNIFOR reinforces the state’s commitment to respecting diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. The new complex spans over 1.214 hectares, featuring state-of-the-art facilities, including a two-level meeting room, a 1,000-person banquet hall, commercial spaces, and a rooftop green area designed with eco-friendly features.
The project, which took more than 24 months to complete, was praised for its timely delivery. Uggah expressed gratitude to MBKS, the consulting team, and contractors who ensured the successful completion of this landmark. He also announced that UNIFOR CEO John Kennedy would lead a dedicated team to maintain the complex, ensuring its sustainability and functionality for the Sarawak community.
Also attending the ceremony were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, a member of the UNIFOR Welfare Board of Trustees, Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, and MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, who echoed the sentiments of pride in Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to religious and cultural harmony.
