Sarawak’s Hydrogen Future: GPS Defends Investment Against DAP Criticism

KUCHING (March 12): Sarawak’s push for hydrogen energy is a well-planned investment, not a reckless gamble, said Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang, countering DAP’s Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong’s recent criticisms.

Yong had questioned the state’s hydrogen initiatives, claiming they were misguided and financially risky. However, Lo dismissed her remarks as “narrow and outdated,” arguing that Sarawak holds a unique advantage in the global shift toward clean energy.

Hydrogen Strategy Backed by Resources and Global Recognition

“Sarawak is not blindly investing in hydrogen; we are strategically leveraging our strengths,” Lo said in a statement.

He credited Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for positioning Sarawak as a global leader in hydrogen energy, adding that the state has resources that make hydrogen production viable and sustainable.

“Unlike the failed hydrogen projects Yong mentioned, Sarawak has a competitive edge with its hydroelectric power and natural gas reserves, ensuring cost-effective hydrogen production.”

With abundant rainfall and hydroelectric capacity, Lo said Sarawak enjoys a natural advantage that other countries lack. He also pointed out that major economies like Germany, South Korea, China, Japan, and Singapore are investing in hydrogen for heavy transport and industrial use.

Hydrogen vs. Electric Vehicles Debate

Yong had argued that electric buses are a better alternative, but Lo disagreed, saying battery-powered vehicles are inefficient for long-haul transport and industrial applications, where hydrogen excels.

“Sarawak’s hydrogen strategy has gained international attention, and our Premier has been invited to speak at global energy forums. If hydrogen was truly a failed venture, why would global energy leaders take our strategy seriously?” he questioned.

Opposition’s Unfulfilled Promises

Lo also challenged DAP’s credibility, citing the opposition’s failure to deliver key election promises, including a 20 per cent oil royalty for Sarawak, autonomy over education and healthcare, recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), and RM2,000 cash assistance promised to Sarawakians in 2018.

“If the opposition wants to criticise GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) for long-term investments, they should first explain why their own short-term promises remain unfulfilled,” he said.

Sarawak Leading the Green Energy Transition

Lo reaffirmed that Sarawak is setting trends, not just following them, thanks to its natural resources, strong leadership, and global recognition.

“The world is transitioning towards renewable energy, and Sarawak is taking the lead. If Yong refuses to acknowledge this reality, perhaps it is her perspective, not Sarawak’s hydrogen ambition, that is truly outdated,” he added.
