SIBU, Jan 5: The search for a 65-year-old man who fell from a tugboat near the Rajang River estuary in Tanjung Manis has ended in heartbreak. The body of the victim, identified as Mustafpa bin Abdullah @ Moses Anak Mleng, was discovered by local fishermen this morning, bringing a five-day search and rescue (SAR) operation to a tragic close.
The incident occurred on January 1 when Mustafpa fell from the tugboat Danum 126 while it was towing the barge Linau 27, which was loaded with cement. Despite relentless efforts by authorities and the community, his whereabouts remained unknown until today.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reported that at 11.50am, the victim’s family received word from local fishermen who had found his body near Kampung Sungai Murong in Kabong District. Shortly after, the remains were retrieved and transported to Sarikei Hospital at 2.40pm for identification and further procedures.
Authorities expressed their condolences to the victim’s family and thanked all parties involved in the SAR operation, including local fishermen, enforcement agencies, and volunteers who tirelessly supported the efforts.
This tragedy highlights the risks faced by those working in the maritime and logistics sectors, where unpredictable weather and challenging conditions are daily realities.
