SIBU, Jan 30: In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, chose not to participate in the traditional yee sang tossing during the Ministry’s Chinese New Year open house in Sibu. The decision came as a mark of respect for his constituents in Bintulu, who are currently battling severe floods.

Tiong, who is also the president of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and the Member of Parliament for Bintulu, attended the celebration in Sibu to fulfill his duties to his Dudong constituents. However, he felt it was inappropriate to partake in the festive yee sang tossing while many in Bintulu are suffering.

Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, PDP Deputy President and Deputy Transport Minister, explained Tiong’s decision. “He came back because Dudong is also his constituency, but he couldn’t join in the yee sang tossing. He said it felt wrong to celebrate while people on the ground are suffering. He holds his people very close to his heart,” Harry shared.

The floods in Bintulu have affected many areas, including town regions and longhouses. Tiong is expected to return to Bintulu soon to oversee relief efforts and assist those impacted by the disaster.

The Chinese New Year celebration, held at Pulau Li Hua Commercial Centre, saw a massive turnout of around 18,000 participants. The event caused significant traffic congestion in the surrounding areas for several hours. Among the attendees were PDP leaders Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat Jubin and Krian assemblyman Friday Belik, as well as Democratic Action Party (DAP) leaders Lanang MP Alice Lau and Sibu MP Oscar Ling.

Tiong’s decision to skip the yee sang toss highlights his deep connection with his constituents and his commitment to standing with them during challenging times.
