Batang Lupar, 26 November 2024 – A baleen whale carcass found stranded along the Batang Lupar River has shocked local residents and authorities. The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) revealed that the whale was likely swept into the river by the powerful monsoon currents.
An autopsy conducted by SFC uncovered troubling findings: the whale’s stomach contained various trash items, including slippers and plastic. This highlights the pressing issue of marine pollution, which not only endangers marine life but also disrupts local ecosystems.
The SFC expressed gratitude to the collaborative efforts of the Sarawak Museum Department, District Office, JKKK Kampung Triso, Triso ferry operators, and the local community. Their collective action ensured a smooth clean-up operation to address the whale carcass and mitigate unpleasant odours in the area.
Residents of Kampung Triso and nearby agencies played a significant role in assisting with the clean-up. Additionally, the whale’s bones will now be preserved by the Sarawak Museum Department, where they will serve as a valuable resource for education and research.
The discovery has sparked discussions on environmental conservation, with experts urging the public to reduce waste and protect marine biodiversity. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the long-term impacts of human activities on the natural world.
As monsoon season continues, authorities encourage residents to remain vigilant and report unusual sightings along rivers and coasts.
