KUALA LUMPUR: Every Chinese New Year, Yayasan MR D.I.Y. ensures that those in charitable homes and care centres across Malaysia can join in the festive celebrations. This year, the foundation continued its tradition by spreading joy and warmth through its “Ular-lar” initiative.
In a heartfelt gesture, the foundation’s volunteers reached out to 14 homes across the country, delivering “Ular-lar” care boxes to a variety of homes – from orphanages to care centres for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. These care packages were filled with Chinese New Year goodies, such as mandarin oranges and cookies, as well as everyday essentials to bring comfort to the residents.

The “Ular-lar” initiative, which benefited nearly 700 individuals, was designed to spread festive cheer to those who might otherwise miss out on the joys of the season. At Yayasan Sunbeams Home, an orphanage in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, the team went beyond just delivering care packages. They filled the air with laughter and fun by hosting games, performing the ‘Ular-lar’ dance, and decorating the home with festive ornaments.

The volunteers also organised a traditional ‘Lou Sang’ ceremony, a Chinese New Year custom that symbolizes unity and prosperity. During the event, Alex Goh, MR D.I.Y.’s Group Vice President of Marketing, presented the home with RM3,000 in MR D.I.Y. cash vouchers, helping the home purchase essential supplies.
The initiative also extended to PPDK Sentuhan Kasih in Kuching, Sarawak, ensuring that the festive spirit reached homes in different parts of Malaysia.
“Chinese New Year is a time for families to reunite, but not everyone has the chance to experience that joy,” said Zaleha Mohd Mydin, CEO of Yayasan MR D.I.Y. “Our mission is to make sure no one is left out of the celebrations. This year, we took it a step further with our ‘Ular-lar’ initiative to bring extra cheer and excitement.”
