Kuching, 25 December 2024 – Sarawak’s safety and security concerns have once again come under the spotlight as YB Lo delivered a strong call for fairer treatment in the allocation of the federal government’s RM600 million security contract. The contract, designed to provide security personnel for schools nationwide, has left Sarawak receiving only 10% of the total allocation, a disparity that has raised questions and fueled demands for justice.
Enhancing Security in Batu Kitang
In a recent discussion with his constituents, YB Lo responded to a query from The Daily News Zone. YB Lo outlined a plan to boost security in N13 Batu Kitang, focusing on three key measures:
- Increasing Police Presence: Calling for more officers to patrol the area and provide faster response times.
- Deploying Surveillance Vehicles: Strengthening patrols with more vehicles to ensure broader coverage.
- Installing Additional CCTVs: Expanding CCTV coverage in high-risk and public areas to enhance monitoring.
“These steps are vital for ensuring the safety and peace of mind of our communities,” said YB Lo, highlighting the urgent need for more resources.
RM600 Million Security Contract: Sarawak’s Share
The federal government’s security contract has drawn sharp criticism for its uneven allocation. While West Malaysia receives 90%, Sarawak is allocated only 10%.
- YB Lo’s View: “This is grossly unfair. Sarawak contributes vast resources to the federal government, yet we receive a fraction of what we deserve.”
- Local Capacity Overlooked: Sarawak, with its 12 security companies, is well-equipped to manage these contracts. YB Lo argued that these companies should have been prioritized to ensure the funds benefit the state’s economy directly.
Unanswered Questions on Allocation
YB Lo expressed frustration over the lack of transparency in the distribution process.
- How was the allocation decided? YB Lo admitted he was not familiar with the details but presumed federal agencies were responsible.
- Was the bidding process open to Sarawakian firms? He called for greater inclusivity and fairness in future federal projects.
Economic Benefits for Sarawak
YB Lo emphasized the significant benefits of awarding these contracts to local companies.
- Job Creation: Contracts handled by Sarawakian firms would create employment opportunities for local workers.
- Boosting the Economy: The revenue generated would stay within Sarawak, contributing to the state’s growth and prosperity.
Unity Is Key
Urging Sarawakians to rally behind their leaders, YB Lo highlighted the importance of unity in reclaiming the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“Alone, we are weak, but united, Sarawak is strong. We must support leaders like Abang Jo, who are committed to restoring our rights and ensuring fairness for Sarawak,” YB Lo said.
Looking Ahead
When asked about ensuring a fairer share in future contracts, YB Lo expressed optimism but stressed the need for Sarawakians to stand together. “Our unity will determine how much we can achieve for Sarawak,” he said.
A Message to Sarawakians
YB Lo ended with a poignant reminder from the late Adenan Satem: “Jaga Sarawak baik-baik.” He urged Sarawakians to focus on self-reliance and continue advocating for their rights. “After 65 years in Malaysia, it’s clear we must prioritize Sarawak’s interests and work to secure a better future for all,” he said.
