The Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Isthmus Run 2024 made a resounding return on August 11, 2024, marking its ninth edition as part of the Kuching City Day celebrations. This annual event has grown to be a cornerstone in the local community, drawing thousands of participants for a morning of fitness, camaraderie, and charity. The event’s significance was underscored by its ability to unite Kuching’s residents in a shared celebration of health, unity, and giving back to the community.

Early Morning Start Energizes Participants

The event kicked off in the early hours, with the Half-Marathon (21km) category flagging off at 4:30 AM, followed by the 10km run at 6:00 AM, and the 5km ‘Fun Run’ at 6:45 AM. Despite the early start, participants were enthusiastic, filling the Isthmus with energy and excitement. The sight of thousands of runners braving the morning chill, warming up, and getting ready to tackle the various courses was a testament to the event’s popularity and the community’s commitment to fitness and health.

SEB’s Leadership Highlights Event’s Significance

SEB’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, played a pivotal role in the event, officiating the 10km and 5km categories by flagging off the races. In his opening remarks, Datuk Sharbini emphasized the importance of the Isthmus Run, not only as a platform for promoting a healthy lifestyle but also as a crucial initiative for community engagement and charitable contributions.

“This event is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of Kuching’s vibrant community spirit. As we commemorate Kuching’s elevation to city status in 1988, we are reminded of the importance of fostering a sense of pride and unity among our residents,” said Datuk Sharbini.

His words resonated with the participants, many of whom were inspired by the event’s dual focus on fitness and philanthropy.

A Strong Turnout Reflects Community Support

This year’s Isthmus Run registered over 3,100 participants across all categories, with 732 runners in the 10km category and 1,602 in the 5km ‘Fun Run’. The turnout was a clear indication of the event’s growing popularity and the community’s eagerness to be part of such an impactful initiative. The event’s theme, “Run for Sustainability,” was evident in the eco-friendly measures implemented, such as the use of water dispensers, biodegradable paper cups, and reusable race pack bags. SEB’s commitment to environmental sustainability was a key highlight, aligning with its role as Malaysia’s largest renewable energy developer.

Runfluencer Group Adds to the Event’s Appeal

A notable presence at the event was The Runfluencer Group, one of Kuching’s prominent running groups. The group’s captain, Gwen Chong, and vice-captain, Marie Lim, served as run marshals, ensuring the smooth conduct of the race and participating in various Sarawak Energy Isthmus Run 2024 related activities. Their involvement added a layer of excitement and motivation for many participants, especially the younger runners who look up to them as role models in the running community.

Charitable Contributions Make a Lasting Impact

The charitable aspect of the Isthmus Run has always been a significant draw for participants, and this year was no exception. Proceeds from the event will be distributed among eight charitable organizations, including Sarawak Eco Warriors, Engineers Without Borders Malaysia Sarawak Branch, Life Care Society, Sarawak Women for Women Society, Sarawak Society for the Deaf, Mental Health Association of Sarawak, Kuching Autistic Association, and the Kidney Association of Sarawak. The funds raised will go a long way in supporting these organizations’ vital work in the community.

“The Sarawak Energy Isthmus Run has once again demonstrated the power of community,” said Datuk Sharbini. “It’s not just about running; it’s about coming together to support those in need and promoting a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.”

A Memorable Event with Lasting Effects

As the runners cooled down and gathered for the closing ceremony, the sense of accomplishment and community spirit was palpable. The 2024 Sarawak Energy Isthmus Run not only brought fitness enthusiasts together but also made a meaningful impact on the local community. Participants left the event with a sense of pride, knowing that their efforts had contributed to a greater cause.

The Isthmus Run has solidified its place as a must-attend event in Kuching’s annual calendar, and with each passing year, it continues to grow in size and significance. The combination of fitness, community engagement, and charitable giving ensures that the event remains relevant and beloved by all who take part. The 2024 edition will be remembered not just for the races but for the unity, generosity, and spirit it fostered among all who were involved.
