Islamic College to Promote Holistic Education in Sarawak
MUKAH, September 17 – In a significant move to enhance educational opportunities for the Muslim community in Sarawak, the Sarawak government, under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has announced the establishment of an Islamic technical college. The new institution aims to provide Muslim students with a balanced education that combines both religious and worldly knowledge, fulfilling their obligations as students of Islam while equipping them for the modern world.
During his speech at the Maulidur Rasul gathering and parade held at Dataran Pehin Setia Raja in Mukah today, Abang Johari emphasized the importance of providing a comprehensive education for Muslims that aligns with the teachings of the Quran while also encompassing technical and secular subjects.
Fostering Respect and Leadership through Education
Premier Abang Johari noted that the Islamic technical college would play a crucial role in upholding the dignity of Islam and ensuring that Muslim students emerge as role models for society.
“This initiative is for us to uphold the dignity of Islam so that it can be respected, and for Muslims to become an example to other religions,” said Abang Johari.
He also acknowledged the unity among Sarawakians, particularly the Muslim community, and urged continued efforts to elevate living standards through quality education.
“We should be an example and continue to maintain our lives and upgrade our livelihoods through good education,” he added.
Embracing the Teachings of Prophet Muhammad
In his address, Premier Abang Johari also drew parallels between the development of the Islamic technical college and the exemplary life of Prophet Muhammad, who is revered for his trustworthiness, responsibility, and significant contributions to humanity. The Premier urged Muslims in Sarawak to carry out their duties with the same character and sense of purpose exemplified by Prophet Muhammad, known as Al-Amin (the trustworthy).
He explained that the Sarawak government is implementing the concept of muraqabah (mindfulness), which takes into account not only individual lives but also collective responsibilities toward the environment and society.
Balancing Development and Environmental Responsibility
Abang Johari highlighted Sarawak’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection, noting that the state’s policies align with Islamic principles and address global issues such as climate change and food security.
“Under this concept, we must take into account all aspects of life. That is why the Sarawak government is focusing on protecting the environment while at the same time developing our state to a better level,” said Abang Johari.
As the world grapples with the impacts of climate change and food security challenges, the Premier reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s commitment to policies that bring about goodness and benefit to all aspects of life.
Prominent Figures in Attendance
The Maulidur Rasul gathering was graced by several notable figures, including Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, who were the guests of honour. Other dignitaries present included Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh, and Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

Premier Abang Johari took the opportunity to express his gratitude to all Sarawakians, particularly the Muslim community, for their strong sense of unity and collective progress. He encouraged continued collaboration and mutual support, particularly in the pursuit of educational and developmental goals that benefit the entire state.
“Our strength lies in our unity and our ability to work together as one people, regardless of our backgrounds,” he said.
