KUCHING: Sarawak is positioning itself as a global hub for green technology, attracting major international players to drive sustainable energy initiatives. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted this ambition during the 2025 Sarawak Post-Budget Special Interview aired on TVS last night (Dec 11).
The state’s focus is on becoming a leader in hydrogen production, a vital component in reducing global carbon emissions. Premier Abang Johari revealed that renowned companies, including Japan’s Sumitomo, are keen on investing in Sarawak’s hydrogen economy. “They need sources capable of producing hydrogen, and we are processing it,” he said.
Sarawak is also drawing interest from South Korea, thanks to its strategy of taking only minor equity stakes in green technology ventures while letting foreign investors fund the majority of the projects.
Abang Johari expressed optimism about the global shift toward renewable energy. “With alternative energy sources and cost-effective production, the global economic structure will evolve significantly,” he noted.
Early Efforts in Hydrogen Innovation
Reflecting on his tenure before becoming Premier, Abang Johari shared insights into his pioneering research on hydrogen production with global firm Linde. Sarawak’s abundant water resources play a critical role in splitting hydrogen and oxygen molecules for renewable energy.
While initial production costs were high—at 60 sen per kilowatt-hour for 1kg of hydrogen—technological advancements like electrolysis have halved the cost to 30 sen per kilowatt-hour. This milestone is a testament to the state’s dedication to green technology.
Hydrogen-Powered Future
Sarawak’s collaboration with Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) is further advancing hydrogen production. The state’s public transportation system, including the upcoming Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART), will soon be powered by hydrogen. Infrastructure to support this vision is already underway.
As the global demand for sustainable energy rises, Sarawak’s investments and innovations place it at the forefront of green energy development.
